As DVD playback made the PlayStation 2 more than just a game machine, hefty multi-media features make the PlayStation 3 an even more versatile home entertainment machine. Features such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video will likely make it the central component of your media set-up. Still, it is first and foremost a powerful gaming console.
Under the Hood
The PS3 features IBM's "Cell" processor and a co-developed Nvidia graphics processor that makes the system able to perform two trillion calculations per second. That makes the PlayStation 3 40 times faster than the PS2. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, it also boasts an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TV and projectors. The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience. This console also provides for a sound experience by supporting Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, as well as Linear PCM 7.1. A pre-installed 40 GB hard disc drive allows you to save games as well as download content from the internet. Unlike the other models of the PlayStation 3, the 40GB does not offer backwards compatibility.

Blu-Ray Is the New Way
Sony's PlayStation 3 games are encoded onto the Blu-Ray disc media format, which can hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This increase in capacity, combined with the awesome power of its processor and graphics card, promises mind-blowing games once developers have learned how to fully harness the new console's power. The PS3 will also support CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats.
Sensational Controller
New gamers intuitively move the controller while playing, even though that movement has traditionally had no relation to what's going on in the game. Sony has picked up on this tendency and is using it to bring a new level of control to the PS3. Inside the controller is a high-precision sixaxis sensing system that accurately detects fine movements in pitch, roll, and yaw, as well as three dimensions of movement. This means that future PS3 games will be controlled by the movements of your hands rather than just your thumbs. For example, you might be able to steer a car by holding the controller like a steering wheel.
While the PS3 controller looks much like its Dual Shock predecessors, it will lack the force-feedback vibration since that would only interfere with the sensing system. It uses Bluetooth 2.0 wireless technology and can support wireless controllers. It's a hot-swappable system, so if your controller is running low on power, just pause your game and connect a USB 2.0 cable. You can continue playing while your controller recharges automatically.
A Slew of New Games
A whole host of game publishers back the PS3. Current and future titles for the system, include The Eye of Judgment, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Tekken 6, and Heavenly Sword.
Online
Sony has stated that the PS3 will have similar online connectivity and services as the next generation of Xbox Live. Calling it "an always on, always connected device," SCEI's chief technical officer Masa Chatani said the PS3 would be constantly in touch with a "PlayStation World" network "fundamentally based on community, communication commerce, and content." Technically, the infrastructure is there to make that connection. The PS3 supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T Ethernet, as well as IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless networking protocols.

Customer Reviews of 'Sony Playstation 3 Console (40GB Version)'
Excellent console that sadly failed after two months. (20. August 2008)
I have purchased two Ps3 in the last three months, for Husband and for son.
One from Amazon the other from Toysrus.
One of them failed, (The one from Toysrus, although that's most probably not relevant),
and I believe it was the disc reader.
It does not do anything after putting in a game or dvd, there's just a continuous loading
bubble in top right corner.
Sony collected it and replaced it with a refurbished one within two days, which is rather
annoying when the one we had was externally in perfect condition, and the refurbished
one is badly scuffed and scratched all over the top.
It's now a matter of keeping our fingers crossed that this does not happen again, although
after an Internet search, this is not an uncommon problem.
Apart from all of that, the Ps3 is a fantastic console, that I give five stars to for the brilliant
gaming experience alone.
SIMPLY THE BETTER CONSOLE (19. August 2008)
having now owned 5 xbox360s and having every single one of them break down on me after 1 month of owning i decided to take the plunge and go for the ps3, and boy am i glad i did, this machine is simply fantastic in every aspect, yes its been stripped down, but still with what you get it already is a real rival to the 360 and will soon overtake the 360 as the main console kids and adults alike will want, i hear people moaning about there only being a 40gb hard drive, well iv had the console for roughly 6 months and there has never been an issue about space, the graphics on hi def are spot on and i see no differance on assassins creed having played both the 360 and ps3 versions, and as for this screen tearing?, id love one of you to come round and show me just where this is as iv seen none of this, the ps3 games are growing and though short of the 360s there is plenty out there to keep you going, online play isnt as good as the 360 yet, but it is improving, all in all i cant find fault with anything about this console, there is no way i would ever dream of going back to the 360, doingg so would be like playing russian roulette as to weather it breaks down or not, iv owned 5 and each one has stopped recognising disks after a month of purchase, the ps3 never breaks down, doesnt over heat like the 360-or frying pan whichever you prefer to call it.SIMPLY WORTH EVERY EXPENSIVE PENNY IT COSTS - BUY ONE OF MISS OUT IT REALLY IS THAT GOOD!!!.
Wait (17. August 2008)
amazing!!! wait till the 23rd of aug 2008 though when the new one comes - 80 GB version. 40 not enough!!! I own GT5 Prolouge and Fifa 08 (both awesome games even without HDTV amazing graphics). They both require me to update to do online and generally improve game. games better with update although for every game update took about 3gb of storage plus 9 GB system update required to create online account. Game progress saving takes hardly anything plus 80GB comes with dualshock controller - much better i am told. Overall is very good but 80 will be betterTHE GREAT ONE!! (14. August 2008)
Ok so the 40GB version...its had some bad press as it lost its backward capability and lets be honest, there is the obviously loss of 20GB! Well to be honest the 40GB version is so much better!! The new chip is more advanced, quieter and stays much cooler. The difference this makes is huge, you don't get distracted by the noise, you wont have any problems with overheating and you will get better performance. One thing that amazes me every time is the fact that even if all you wanted was a blu ray player, this unit would be cheaper than half the other options on the market!! On top of that you have 2 usb ports, internet capability, the best games console on the market, you can also use it as an external hard drive for music and photos!!
I know 40GB isn't much, but, with almost no knowledge of technology you can take out the hard drive and replace it with a much larger drive. This will make your warranty invalid unfortunately but its helpful for everyone to know that this is possible without damaging your system!
The wireless controllers are second to none. They are light, the battery last for hours and they charge very quickly. I think this makes a huge difference to the console as it makes playing more enjoyable and easier. It also means you can turn your console off without leaving you seat...most useful when your playing in bed!!
The game choice is slightly limited at the moment, there are many games but I don't believe the full potential of the console has really been tapped yet but i'm sure this will be rectified over the next couple of years.
Another bonus of this console is that you can get it for a good price nowadays. Grab yourself a second hand one and you really can be playing for under 250 pounds....that really is a great price for such a huge system with such broad capabilities!!
Buy one and you wont be disappointed!!
If you want the best for online play go for the xbox (11. August 2008)
For the best part of 6 months, my friends have been bereting me to get a PS3 or xbox 360 and after around 4 days I am certain I have made the wrong decision.PROS of this machine:
Graphics are pretty awesome.
Easy to use menus
Free online play
Built in wireless
CONS of this machine:
No included headset
No great PS3 exclusive games
Absolutely no sense of team spirit
Fast at loading
The biggest problem I have with this console is that when playing online with about 12 people 0-3 people will have headsets meaning they can't tell you where the enemy is for example and you can't have as much fun as you could have. I'd rather spend another £35 a year for better online play. Another problem is the only game at the moment that is great and only avalible for ps3 is MGS4 but with xbox there is Halo and Gears of War.
