Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings. ![]() Old timer Snake returns for what is slated as the final installment in the Metal Gear series. MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy bits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4."
Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final instalment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumoured that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.
In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camouflage," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumour has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.
Customer Reviews of 'Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)'
Exceeds what you come to expect from a game (20. August 2008)
For anyone looking for reviews of this game the internet will provide a vast array, so I will keep mine brief and to the point. If you like any previous Metal Gear for the story buy this. If you liked them for the gameplay this will blow you away. It is single most beautifully balanced and effortlessly executed experience I have enjoyed in around 15 years of gaming. This is also the reason I ignore criticisms of the story being overbearing, as a fan of the story i watched enjoyed every minute on a couple of playthroughs and subsequently skipped story sequences and just played the game, there isn't a single section which is less than great and many moments when it touches phenomenal.
I close by strongly recommending you try the online portion of the game too. I pretty much ignored it until recently and I'm not hugely into online gaming yet either, but MGS4 gameplay + a large variety of fun and interesting individual and team-based modes = a surprisingly fun and addictive experience.
Bottom line: this game oozes class. Don't miss out on this diamond.
Watch a movie instead (15. August 2008)
Have to disagree with the majority of people here. Bought the game on the strength of all the positive reviews and utter disappointed. Lots of cut scenes; so what I can buy a blue ray disc if I want that. Controls are not intuitive and with some awful camera angles makes it a real pain to play. Only wish I could send it back for a refund as after 3-4 hours of play am sorely tempted to throw it in the trash....never again Konami.Absolutly amazing (15. August 2008)
I got this as the first game when i brought my ps3 and was certainly not let down.I could write a review a page long, but would not do this game justice. From the start i was lost for words, when the opening movie finished and it went straight into the gameplay, the graphics remaing the same. I had never seen anything like it. To put it simply its like playing in a movie clip all the time.
By no means is it perfect for starters im all for cut scenes, but they would dribble on for quite a long time.
But take that away and your presented with a game as deserving for 5 stars as any other game i've played.
Quite simply a must buy.
Metal Gear Solid Bore (15. August 2008)
`Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots' is one of the few remaining exclusives available to Sony since Microsoft have been paying vast sums to publishers who are now going multi format. For this reason the game needs to be good as it is an ambassador for the console. In terms of graphics it is outstanding being more beautiful than I think the 360 could do. However, in the areas that actually matter the game is deeply flawed. At around 15 hours long the game is a decent length, unfortunately around half this time is spent watching some of the most overblown and boring cut scenes ever. I have played hundreds of games, but `MGS4's need to explain everything makes it the most boring for a long time. This insistent need to show beautiful cut scenes means that the actual playing sections are disjointed and short. This is a shame as they are good. There are as always a few fantastic Easter eggs in the game for people willing to hunt them down. The problem is that the few great moments are not worth the hours of turgid cut scenes that split them. I can imagine many people left behind by the current generation of consoles buying a PS3 and MGS4 and wondering what has happened to gaming in the past 5 years. Do yourself a favour and wait for `Bioshock' to come out on the PS3 and that will show you how modern story telling is done (or get it know on the 360/PC).
